WHY MUHAMMADU BUHARI? A MEMO TO PATRIOTIC NIGERIANS

j“Fellow Nigerians:

Forget about your political affiliations for a moment, put aside your ethnic empathies in an instant, overlook your religious associations in a jiffy, and ask yourselves some frank questions. (1) Is my future guaranteed now than when Dr. Goodluck Jonathan became the 14th Nigerian head of state on May 5, 2010? (2) Am I truly more secured and unrestricted in Nigeria today than four years ago? (3) With the current level of insecurity, low standards of education, and dearth of infrastructure, can I truthfully say that my children face an enhanced future? If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, you possibly belong to one of the following groups: you are benefiting from the rot in Nigeria; you are from the same region as some of the officials; you share the same religion with some officeholders, or; you cannot fathom how low Nigeria has sunk on the rungs of world ladder, under President Jonathan.

Nostalgically, you would recall that our country gained independence from the United Kingdom, nearly five-and-a-half decades ago. Like a nation destined to reach the stars, Nigeria took off like an express shuttle. A light in a dark place, the homeland emerged as the dazzling star of Africa. From Abeokuta to Zaria, Aba to Zungeru, Azare to Zuru, the country seemed like the unstoppable political, economic, and scholastic hub of the continent. That was the finest epoch for Africa’s most populous nation. Today, the corrupt, insensitive, and unashamed politicians have devalued our country from the ‘Giant of Africa’ to the ‘Charlatan of Africa.’ At this instant, commonplace Nigerians watch like feeble sentries as our nation drools into oblivion. The world no longer reveres Nigeria and Nigerians, and our officials occupy the back benches among the committee of world leaders.

The ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has frozen our nation in time. The private objectives of its officials stand in stark contrast to the common aspirations of conventional Nigerians to unshackle themselves from poverty, insecurity, and hopelessness. There is violence because the extremists have access to an army of hopeless youths. Endemic corruption is the rule, not the exception, under President Jonathan. The president has turned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to a petty-thief catcher, while the principal political rustlers rob the nation unrestrained. Nigerian babies are dying in the absence of infant formula. Our medical facilities have become death-consulting-facilities, due to lack of basic lifesaving machines and competent personnel. The world smirks as President Jonathan and his party incinerate money, celebrate ineptitude, and revel over speculative accomplishments.

I predicted, long before the parties elected their flag bearers, that the nation’s political compass pointed toward a ‘stubborn’ Muhammadu Buhari and an irredeemably corrupt President Goodluck Jonathan. I added that the ‘devil’ in Buhari seemed more truthful than the ‘angel’ in President Jonathan. The president and his party have raped the country for one-and-a-half decades, without sharing the dividends of democracy with ordinary Nigerians. The depraved precedent created by the ruling party now makes the campaign promises by President Jonathan undependable. If the bathroom promises to be the source of a river, we cannot rely on the bathroom of the filthy man who doesn’t bath often. If Nigerians want positive change, they cannot rely on a clueless president and his regressive political party. Vote for positive change, vote for Muhammadu Buhari on February 14, 2015.”
